Projects funded by the National Science Centre (NCN)

  • Differential Modeling for Use in Marketing and Biomedical Investigations (2010–2013). The aim of this project is to develop methods of differential modeling, which means modeling of differences between objects belonging to two groups:experimental (on which certain operation was performed) and of reference one (not influenced by this operation). In 2012 several tasks of the project advanced significantly. Regression methods for uplift modeling have been developed and applied to medical datasets. The results have been published on a major workshop related to medical data analysis. Significant progress has also been achieved on Support Vector Machines and ensemble methods for uplift modeling.   • Research and development of atomic time standards ensembles algorithms in Database for TA(PL) – RATAPL (2011–2013). Database for TA(PL) can be recognized as the instrument: for canvassing and filing of measuring data from distributed system of time scale comparison; for elaboration of mutual comparison results; for automatic enumeration of group timescales based on chosen algorithms and computing of time scale correction for UTC and TAI and statistic measures of their instability. The aim of this project is to develop and implement a new timescale algorithm based on NIST AT2 algorithm. The project requires analysis of algorithm theorem to adjust it to a small remote group of time standards. After a set of tests, the best solution should be chosen for normal operation. Projects granted by the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBiR)

  • Interdisciplinary System of Interactive Scientific and Technical Information – SYNAT (2010–2013) realized in the framework of Strategic Research Programme and applied by the University of Warsaw – Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modeling, has been realized by the participants of SYNAT network. The aim of the project is to develop integrated computer platform for the national system of scientific and sci-tech information. The platform will enable realization of infrastructure development programs of scientific information resources, scientific and academic communication systems and, simultaneously, it will become the development base of integral structure of collecting, making available and developing national scientific and educational contents and documentation of cultural heritage. To obtain these goals, works of basic character as well as associated development activities will be performed, leading to the implementation of substantial informatics solutions.   • Mobile laboratory for functions and quality testing of electronic communication services to be used by command and communication teams – MLB (2010–2012). The general aim of the project realized with Military Communications Works No 1 is improvement of telecommunication networks efficiency, especially the networks important for public security. The project was successfully completed. Its final product is the prototype of mobile laboratory ready for operation in real environment in which the services are performed.   • Prototype of Perimetric Protection System for Critical Telecommunication Infrastructure – SPOT (2010–2012) realized with Asseco Poland PLC. Within this project, a system for monitoring of fixed telecommunication networks was developed and successfully tested. SPOT system includes remote test heads deployed across the network, performs measurements of designated copper pairs in cables and monitors the status of sensors installed in facilities (buildings, manholes, street cabinets, etc.) The data from test heads are transmitted over IP network to a centralized monitoring centre, where all data are logged and analyzed. All abnormal events, like cable cuts, opening of manholes, a change of cable parameters, etc. are reported to operators working on PC-based work stations. The system is capable of locating cable damage or facility break-in, presenting alarms on maps, displaying facility-related information like technical characteristics, cable route, street address, contacts to service companies and local police. It is also possible to generate reports and event statistics for the purpose of network maintenance management or QoS reporting. SPOT is primarily aimed at the protection of cable networks against theft of copper cables, vandalism and facility damage due to construction work, in order to reduce service disruption and to hasten repairs. The system is designed for fully centralized monitoring of cable infrastructure at a scale of the country. Prototype hardware and software have been tested during two separate trials in TP SA network, being successfully used for monitoring of copper cables and manholes.   • Monitoring System for Telecom Infrastructure – SMIT (2012-2014), realized with Asseco Poland PLC. This is a logical successor to SPOT project, with the aim to make the system more versatile and capable of automatic identification of slowly-developing failures or danger zones by means of advanced data analysis software. SMIT will include monitoring of fiber cables, using OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer) test heads and remotely-controlled fiber switches to check dark or live fibers for breaks or increase of attenuation, in addition to monitoring of traditional copper pair cables. Other kinds of telecom facilities will be monitored and protected using various sensors (temperature, fire, break-in, explosive gas, etc.) deployed in locations of interest.; Leader: Dr Krzysztof Borzycki, Z14
  • Development of a modern monitoring system to increase fire safety of buildings (2012-2013). The result of the project will be a prototype of modular equipment integrating all used in Poland fire monitoring systems. The prototype will be tested in real conditions. The system is planned to be implemented in all National Fire Protection Units on the territory of the country. The project is realized by a consortium, with R&D Centre of Fire Protection – National Research Institute (CNBOP) as a coordinator and AM Technologies Poland.
